George Washington
(aka Jack J.)
Hi, I'm General and President George Washington. I was born on February 22, 1723 in Virginia. I was a very good student and good at sports such as horseback riding and fishing. After my father died, I became a well known surveyor.
I soon joined the English in fighting the French and Indians in the French and Indian War. I was a very brave soldier and good leader of my men. I was chosen to help run Virginia's government.
In Williamsburg, I met and married Martha Curtis. She had two children, Patsy and Jack. I took my new family to live at Mount Vernon. In 1775, the American Revolution began. We fought against soldiers of the English king. The English government had not been fair to the people in the colonies.
I led my army across the frozen Delaware River to win a battle against German soldiers. My armies later won battles at Valley Forge, and in Yorktown against Cornwallis. The last battle won led to the end of the war. The colonies had won their independence from England. The United States of America was born.
I helped write a plan for the new government called the Constitution of the United States of America. It was to be a government "of the people, by the people, for the people." I was named the first President of the United States and after four years elected again.
In 1799, George Washington died and was buried near his home at Mount Vernon. The capital of our country, Washington D.C., was named after George Washington. He is called "the father of His Country."
