The "Free To Read" program, at Pinecrest School, was initiated in order to encourage and foster a love of reading. Read about how it works, and about the requirements and rewards for the grade levels. You can also download "Free To Read" Logs.

Kindergarten

How does one become a Kindergarten reader? It's really quite simple! Just jot down the titles of books that your child has read to a parent, on the "Free to Read" log.

When ten books have been read, sign the form and return to the teacher. Children must read at least 10 books per quarter to qualify as a kindergarten reader. However, children may read as many books as they wish.

Please understand that the books you choose should be easy reading for your child, requiring little or no adult assistance. Please contact your child's teacher with any questions that you may have.

1st - 5th Grade

Requirements:

1. Grades 1-3 - five hundred pages per quarter.
2. Grades 4 & 5 - 9 chapter books per quarter, or as required by teacher (all books must be approved by teacher).

Rewards

Students who reach their goal will receive the following:

1. Free to read certificate.
2. Free to read bookmark.
3. Free to read pencil.
4. Gift certificate from Hometown Buffet - Canoga Park

Students who successfully complete the Free to Read program all 4 quarters, will receive a special award.
