ALGREBRA:

Offers challenging problems on equations, inequalities, polynomials, factoring, statistics and probability. Basic concepts of geometry and trigonometry are introduced to encourage future success. This course prepares students for high school Algebra and Geometry.

PHYSICAL SCIENCE:
Experimentation and the use of formulas are the basis for this course. There is a focus on the application of material to actual “everyday” events. Resources include videos and overhead projector material, which allow for clarity of concepts and detailed outlining. Topics covered include motion, forces, matter, reactions and the Periodic Table. The spring Science Fair requires students to follow the steps of the scientific method based on a physical or chemical related project.
LITERATURE:
An advanced study of literature using anthologies including American Classics 1 & 2, World Classics, Chillers, and Favorite Poems. The focus is on understanding of plot, setting, characterization and theme. Students will judge objectively, and analyze critically what is read. Includes an in-depth study of longer works of literature such as Of Mice and Men and Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Summer reading is required prior to this class.
LANGUAGE:
Expository and creative writing is included with an emphasis on the usage and mechanics of grammar. More extensive sentence diagramming is introduced and preparation for High School entrance exams in English will be stressed. Advanced study of vocabulary in Words to Go and a month long speech preparation and performance is also included. The year will culminate with a major project such as an original magazine or newspaper.
AMERICAN HISTORY:
Covers the period from Pre-Revolutionary America through World War I. Major emphasis is placed on the concept of cause and effect in history, comprehension of ideas, vocabulary and geography. Special sections focus on the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Discussion of modern America is detailed in special seminars.
SPANISH:
Meets three times a week as part of the Language Arts program. This course will prepare students for high school Spanish and in some cases will replace a Spanish I class for high school freshman.
